At least 83 people have died in Ukraine from a cold spell gripping the country.

Temperatures have been as low as -23C. In western areas, vehicles were trapped for three days in a traffic jam that stretched about 20km at one point.

The weather is also affecting Bulgaria and Romania, where six people have reportedly died.

On Friday, the health ministry said that 83 people were known to have died from the cold. Most of them had been found on the streets.

The BBC reports more than 500 people were being treated in hospitals across the country.

Nearly 100 towns and villages are without electricity. Army units have been deployed to help clear the snow on major motorways.
