42 police killed in cattle ambush

Police in Kenya said on Monday that at least 42 police officers were killed in an ambush by cattle rustlers on Saturday.

The ambush took place in Baragoi in the northern Samburu County when officers attempted to recover stolen cattle. Anti-personnel bombs and rocket-propelled grenades were used against them.

A security source told the BBC that the final death toll could be even higher. Nine wounded officers are in hospital.

The Samburu and Turkana communities often steal cattle from each other, and clash over grazing rights and access to water points.

Kenyan media report a similar incident, in which 12 people were killed, occurred nearby two weeks ago.
