Anti-austerity protest in Portugal

6:58 am on 1 October 2012

Tens of thousands of anti-austerity protesters in Portugal have backed a call by some trade unions for a general strike.

Demonstrators in Lisbon denounced the government's economic policies, the BBC reports.

Although unions bussed in members from around the country, it wasn't just activists taking part in the protest, but also citizens angry at policies implemented by a government that has been in power for just 15 months.

The BBC reports the latest opinion polls show that more than three quarters of voters who expressed a preference backed political parties committed to sticking with Portugal's bail-out deal.
