Labor up but still facing landslide loss

10:02 am on 27 August 2012

The latest opinion poll in Australia shows the Labor government's primary vote has climbed to a six-month high and Julia Gillard is now ahead of Tony Abbott as preferred prime minister.

But the ABC reports Labor would still be beaten in a landslide if an election was held now, with the two-party preferred figure giving the Coalition a lead of 54-46.

The poll also found two-thirds of voters were in favour of sending asylum seekers to Nauru and Manus Island.

The Nielsen poll of 1400 has a margin of error of 2.6%.
