4:48 pm on 19 July 2012

A ferry with more than 280 people on board has sunk off the island of Zanzibar.

The ferry had departed left the city of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Zanzibar at about midday local time on Wednesday.

The route between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar is a busy crossing and the journey usually takes about two hours.

The navy says the vessel, the Skagit, got into difficulty because of strong winds.

Twenty four people are reported to have died. Dozens of others are missing and 145 people have been rescued.

Last September, nearly 200 people died when an overcrowded boat with 800 people aboard sank off Zanzibar.
