10:23 am on 3 July 2012

A bid to declare the South Atlantic Ocean as a whale sanctuary has been defeated at the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission.

Latin American countries were hoping the proposal would be approved.

The BBC reports 38 countries voted in favour of the measure and 21 voted against, with two abstentions.

Under the rules of the commission, proposals need a consensus of 75% support for approval.
