PNG election delay 'abuse of constitution'

Papua New Guinea's opposition says the government's actions in deferring elections by six months are an abuse of the constitution.

Parliament on Thursday voted by 63 to 11 to postpone the elections from the original June polling schedule, following a 90-minute debate.

A government minister reported that completion of the electoral roll was behind schedule and that security issues in the Highlands had not been addressed, Radio New Zealand International reports.

Opposition leader Dame Carol Kidu says the government's report on the election preparations did not come from the Electoral Office, despite attempts to present it as if it had.

Dame Carol says the past week is one that PNG will live to regret.

It has also seen the Judicial Conduct Act implemented and two senior judges referred to tribunals by Parliament.

Dame Carol says there is a limit to the tolerance of the people of PNG and she thinks the country is getting very close to it.

She believes PNG is in danger of becoming a dictatorship or disintegrating into anarchy ruled by warlords.
