Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of the American journalist killed in Syria while covering the unrest in Homs. The service was held in her hometown of Oyster Bay in New York

Marie Colvin died with French photographer Remi Ochlik when the makeshift media centre they were in Baba Amr in Homs was shelled by rockets on 22 February.

The well-known war correspondent had just the day before reported on the growing casualties, including babies, from repeated bombardment by government forces.

The bodies of the two journalists remained in Homs as the fighting waged on with Syrian forces refusing to allow humanitarian aid in to the city.

At the service for Ms Colvin, AFP reports, the editor of the British newspaper she worked for said it took a week of tremendous diplomacy to get her out.

The priest praised her for being "a voice to the voiceless", the BBC reports.

The service, at St Dominic's Catholic Church, was attended by senior figures from The Sunday Times, including media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who owns the publication.
