Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Tuesday
The Situation
A deep low-pressure system is directing a strong, cold southerly flow over New Zealand, moving eastward today. As a ridge of high pressure begins to move onto the South Island on Saturday, the strong southerlies are expected to ease.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula, also Taranaki to Kapiti, including Taihape
Showers, some heavy with thunderstorms possible about Northland, Auckland and Coromandel until evening, clearing tomorrow.
Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui and Taupo, also Bay of Plenty
Mainly fine. Isolated afternoon showers.
Gisborne and Hawke's Bay
Mostly cloudy. Rain spreading north today, then easing to isolated showers tomorrow morning.
Wellington and Wairarapa
Rain, with heavy falls in Wairarapa, easing to a few showers this afternoon, then clearing tomorrow afternoon.
Canterbury and Marlborough
Cloudy with isolated showers, clearing to fine overnight, then cloud and showers returning tomorrow evening.
Nelson to Westland, also Otago excluding Clutha and Dunedin
Fine, or becoming fine.
Fiordland, Southland, Clutha and Dunedin
Cloudy periods with showers, mainly about the southern coast.
Chatham Islands
Cloudy periods with showers, easing overnight.
And the outlook for the following three days...
Sunday
North Island: Scattered showers in the east, otherwise mainly fine. South Island: Showers in the east clearing later. Fine elsewhere.
Monday
North Island: Cloud and isolated showers in the northeast clearing. Fine elsewhere. South Island: Fine apart from a few showers for Fiordland and Buller.
Tuesday
North Island: Partly cloudy, with isolated showers in the south and north. South Island: Rain in Fiordland. Partly cloudy with showers in the west. Mainly fine in the elsewhere.
And at the Chathams
Isolated showers turning to rain for a time early Sunday, then clearing on Monday. Strong-to-gale southerlies, easing to for a time on Saturday morning, then easing Monday afternoon.
