Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday

The Situation

A cold southwesterly flow over Aotearoa New Zealand is easing today as a ridge spreads over the country from a high centred over the Tasman Sea. The high then builds over New Zealand tomorrow.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland, Auckland, and Coromandel

Fine, cloud increasing tomorrow. A few showers developing in the far north, spreading through eastern parts late tomorrow.

Waikato to Taranaki, including Bay of Plenty, Taupo, and Taumarunui

Fine, frosty overnight.

Whanganui to Wellington, including Taihape

Generally fine, but the chance of a few showers in Wellington and Taihape this afternoon or evening. Areas of cloud tomorrow morning.

Gisborne to Wairarapa

Mainly fine, but cloud in Wairarapa with isolated showers, spreading north overnight. Clearing Wairarapa tomorrow evening.

Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and Southland

Fine, with frosts overnight. However, a few showers about Banks Peninsula and Stewart Island, clearing this evening.

Buller, Westland and Fiordland

Fine, frosty overnight. Cloud increasing tomorrow, with isolated showers developing about the coast and Fiords.

Chatham Islands

Showers, possibly heavy, easing this afternoon then becoming isolated tomorrow.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Thursday

North Island, cloud increasing in the north but fine with frosty start south of Rotorua. Rain developing in the north and west from afternoon. South Island, in the west, isolated showers then rain at night, possibly heavy. Elsewhere, fine with areas of morning cloud and frosts, but scattered rain developing overnight.

Friday

North Island, rain, possibly heavy at first in Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty, clearing from west by evening. South Island, rain or showers, possibly heavy in Nelson and Marlborough Sounds, clearing in the east to fine in the morning.

Saturday

North Island, fine start for most. Isolated showers in the north and west, turn to rain in the evening. South Island, rain in the west and south, mainly fine elsewhere.

And at the Chathams

Fine spells with the odd shower on Thursday. A few showers turn to rain late on Friday. Rain eases to a few showers on Saturday.
