The Situation
A ridge persists over the North Island today while weakening fronts affect the South Island. Another front affects the southern and eastern South Island tomorrow, followed by strong southwesterlies.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
The North Island central high country, also Gisborne and Hawke's Bay
Generally fine. Isolated showers about the ranges in the afternoons and evenings, some heavy with hail, and possible thunderstorms.
Remaining North Island areas
Areas of cloud morning and evening, otherwise fine. Isolated showers inland north of Manawatu in the afternoons and evenings. A light shower for Wellington tomorrow morning.
Nelson, Marlborough
Fine. Isolated showers about the ranges in the afternoons and evenings, possibly heavy and thundery.
Buller, Grey, Westland
Partly cloudy. A few showers clearing from Westland this evening.
Canterbury, Otago
Cloudy periods. Showers in the afternoons and evenings, some heavy and thundery with hail inland today, and everywhere tomorrow. Inland drizzle overnight.
Southland, Fiordland
Mainly fine today. Showers developing tomorrow afternoon, possibly heavy and thundery.
Chatham Islands
Cloud increasing from evening, patchy drizzle until tomorrow afternoon.

Friday
North Island: Mainly fine in the west and north, and isolated showers elsewhere. South Island: Showers in the south becoming isolated. Partly cloudy elsewhere, with isolated showers clearing.
Saturday
North Island: Partly cloudy in the east with isolated showers about Gisborne. Isolated showers for Coromandel Peninsula and Northland clearing, otherwise fine. South Island: Isolated showers about the far south clearing, and afternoon showers about the Alps. Fine elsewhere.
Sunday
North Island: Partly cloudy with isolated showers north of the central plateau. Fine elsewhere. South Island: Partly cloudy. Showers increasing over Fiordland and Westland.
And at the Chathams
Mostly cloudy. Rain for a time Friday morning, then a few showers that night. Becoming fine on Saturday. Partly cloudy on Sunday. Northerly winds, changing strong-to-gale southwesterly later Friday, easing late Saturday and dying out later Sunday.
