Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Friday

The Situation

A weakening front moves northeast over the country today. Meanwhile, another front reaches Fiordland late evening. Tomorrow, the front over far south travels up the country bringing cool southwesterly flow. Then, a ridge starts building over the lower South Island in the latter half of the day.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland, Auckland and Coromandel

Long fine spells. Isolated showers, mainly tomorrow morning and again tomorrow evening.

Waikato to Kapiti Coast, including Bay of Plenty and the central high country

Scattered showers spreading north in the afternoons and evenings.

Gisborne to Wairarapa, also Wellington

Mainly fine. A few afternoon showers about Wairarapa and Wellington today and elsewhere tomorrow.

Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury

Becoming fine this afternoon. Isolated showers developing around midday tomorrow.

Buller, Westland and Fiordland

Showers, turning to rain for a time tomorrow. Heavy at times with possible thunderstorms tomorrow. Easing to isolated showers about Westland and Buller tomorrow afternoon.

Otago and Southland

Showers developing overnight, some heavy with thunderstorms possible, easing tomorrow afternoon. Snow lowering to 500 metres for a time tomorrow morning.

Chatham Islands

Few showers, clearing this afternoon and returning tomorrow afternoon.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Wednesday

North Island: Fine apart from isolated showers in the east. South Island: Rain or showers for Westland, Fiordland and Stewart Island. Elsewhere, mostly fine.

Thursday

North Island: Showers developing in the west. Partly cloudy elsewhere. Gale northwesterlies in the south for a time. South Island: Rain with heavy falls spreading north, easing to showers in the south later.

Friday

North Island: Rain, with some heavy falls spreading northwards, easing to showers from the south. South Island: Rain in the north and east, with heavy falls, easing to isolated showers. Elsewhere, showers becoming confined to the south.

And at the Chathams

A few showers, clearing Thursday as southwesterlies turn northwest. Showers and strong southwesterlies return Friday.
