Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Monday

The Situation

A weak ridge lies over most of the country today, while a front approaches the lower South Island. Tomorrow, a series of fronts move northwards over the country, followed by a cold southwesterly flow.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty

Partly cloudy, isolated showers.

Waikato to Taranaki including the central high country

Isolated showers, then rain tomorrow evening with possible thunderstorms in the west.

Gisborne to Wairarapa

Mainly fine. Isolated showers this afternoon and evening with possible thunderstorms about Gisborne and the Wairoa District. Isolated showers for Wairarapa tomorrow evening.

Whanganui to Wellington, also Marlborough and Nelson

Often cloudy with isolated showers but rain for a time tomorrow afternoon or evening.

Buller, Grey and Westland

Cloudy periods. Isolated showers, turning to rain with heavy falls tomorrow morning, thunderstorms possible tomorrow afternoon.

Canterbury and north Otago

Mostly cloudy. Rain developing tomorrow afternoon with possible thunderstorms, easing in the evening.

Fiordland, Southland and the remainder of Otago

Periods of rain, turning to showers tomorrow afternoon but clearing inland.

Chatham Islands

Occasional showers.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Friday

North Island: Scattered showers, mainly in the west. South Island: Rain developing in the south early, then spreading elsewhere, easing to isolated showers in the south later.

Saturday

North Island: Showers, some heavy in the west, easing. South Island: A few showers, mainly in the south.

Sunday

North Island: Partly cloudy with isolated showers, mainly in the south. South Island: Isolated showers.

And at the Chathams

Rain, easing to a few showers for a time on Friday. Northerlies dying out on Thursday. Westerlies developing Friday morning, then turning northerly in the afternoon. Changing westerly early Saturday morning.
