Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday

The Situation

A low develops over central New Zealand tonight then moves away to the east of the country tomorrow, followed by a narrow ridge. A front then moves onto the far south from Tasman Sea tomorrow night.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland to Taranaki, including Bay of Plenty and the central high country

Showers, becoming heavy and possibly thundery with hail from this evening, with strong westerlies, easing tomorrow afternoon. Snow to 700 metres about the central high country in the morning.

Gisborne and Hawkes Bay

Mainly fine today. Heavy showers with gale southerlies from tomorrow morning, clearing from the afternoon.

Whanganui to Wellington and Wairarapa, including Canterbury and Marlborough

Showers, developing this afternoon, possibly heavy and thundery for a time. Storm or gale southerlies in the morning, then showers gradually clearing from afternoon. Snow to 400 metres tonight in Marlborough.

Nelson

Fine breaks, but scattered showers from this evening, possibly thundery, clearing tomorrow.

Buller and Westland

Rain, heavy at times with possible thunderstorms, becoming fine tonight. Rain returning tomorrow night.

Otago, Southland and Fiordland

Showers, possibly heavy, falling as snow 400 metres, clearing tomorrow afternoon. Rain developing tomorrow evening.

Chatham Islands

Periods of rain.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Thursday

North Island, isolated early showers, turning to a period of rain for most. Mainly fine towards Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. South Island, morning rain in south and west, easing to a few showers later. A period of rain spreading elsewhere with a strong southwesterly change.

Friday

North Island, cloudy periods and isolated showers in the west. Scattered rain spreading up the east coast later. South Island, occasional showers in the far south and towards Buller, gradually easing. Fine or becoming fine elsewhere.

Saturday

Fine for most. Rain developing later in the day about Fiordland and southern Westland.

And at the Chathams

Periods of showers or rain, with strong southwesterlies at times.Fine spells and easing winds by late Saturday.
