Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday
The Situation
A low pressure system over the north of the North Island is moving away to the southeast on Wednesday evening. A ridge lies over the South Island and the south of the North Island. A couple of fronts are moving northeast over the South Island during Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland to Taranaki, including Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and the central high country
Scattered showers, especially afternoons and evening. Possible thunderstorms and hail with localised downpours in Northland and northern Auckland today.
Gisborne and Hawke's Bay
Periods of rain, heavy falls in Gisborne from this evening, easing tomorrow.
Whanganui to Wellington, also Wairarapa
Cloudy periods, with occasional drizzle about the ranges.
Nelson, Buller, Westland and Fiordland
Isolated showers, mainly about the ranges. Rain spreading north tomorrow, heavy falls possible in Fiordland and southern Westland.
Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and Southland
Mainly fine, areas of morning and evening cloud. Isolated showers for inland Marlborough and Otago this afternoon. Scattered rain developing in Southland and Otago tomorrow afternoon, then a few spots spreading to Canterbury.
Chatham Islands
Partly cloudy, rain developing tomorrow afternoon.
And the outlook for the following three days...
Thursday
North Island: Mainly fine, but isolated showers. South Island: Scattered showers, clearing in the west later.
Friday
North Island: Mostly fine, but isolated showers, especially about the ranges. South Island: Isolated showers in the east clearing. Cloud increasing in the west, and showers developing in Fiordland.
Saturday
North Island: Mostly fine, with increasing high cloud, and northwesterlies strengthening in the south. South Island: Showers in the west, turning to rain with some heavy falls. Rain developing in the south later. Fine and warm in the east and north at first, then high cloud increases later and strong gusty northwesterlies developing.
And at the Chathams
Early rain easing to a few showers on Thursday with southwesterlies. Becoming fine on Friday as southwesterlies eases. High cloud increasing on Saturday with northwesterlies.
