Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Tuesday

The Situation

A ridge of high pressure sits over the North Island today, while a weakening front drifts slowly up the lower South Island. The front moves onto the upper South Island tomorrow, while a new ridge builds in the far south. A trough approaches New Zealand from the northeast late tomorrow.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland

Cloudy periods, and isolated showers during the afternoons and evenings, some possibly heavy and thundery tomorrow.

Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty, also the central high country, Gisborne, and Hawke's Bay

Mostly fine. Isolated showers during the afternoons and evenings, mainly inland.

Waitomo to Wellington and Wairarapa, also Marlborough, Nelson, and Buller

Mainly fine, but cloudy morning and night.

Grey and Westland

Scattered rain spreading slowly north today and tomorrow, mainly about the ranges, easing later tomorrow.

Canterbury

Partly cloudy. A few spots of rain tomorrow.

Otago, Southland, and Fiordland

Rain spreading north today, improving to isolated showers and fine spells about Fiordland and Southland this afternoon, then about Otago later tomorrow.

Chatham Islands

Low cloud or fog, and occasional drizzle.

Sunday

North Island: Cloudy periods and isolated showers, mainly in the north and east, where some may be heavy and thundery. South Island: Showers in the south, spreading to Canterbury from afternoon. Mainly fine elsewhere.

Monday

North Island: Showers in the north, and in the and east. Mainly fine elsewhere. South Island: Cloudy with showers in the east, easing. Mainly fine elsewhere.

Tuesday

North Island: Showers becoming widespread. South Island: Rain developing in the west. Mostly cloudy elsewhere, with a few spots of rain developing later.

And at the Chathams

Low cloud with occasional light rain or drizzle, clearing to fine on Monday and remaining fine on Tuesday. Southeasterlies dying out on Sunday. Southwesterlies developing on Monday, turning northerly on Tuesday.
