The Situation
A ridge of high pressure covers most of New Zealand today. Meanwhile, a trough embedded in a strong northwesterly flow should bring rain to southern New Zealand tomorrow.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula
Mainly fine. Isolated showers about Northland and Coromandel Peninsula in the afternoons and evenings.
Waikato, Bay of Plenty, also Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and the central high country
Cloudy periods. Isolated showers, some heavy and possibly thundery in the afternoons and evenings.
Waitomo to Wellington, also Wairarapa
Partly cloudy with the odd shower about Wairarapa today, otherwise fine.
Buller, Grey, Marlborough and Nelson
Mainly fine. Isolated showers in the Marlborough ranges this afternoon and evening, then some evening cloud everywhere tomorrow.
Canterbury and Otago
Mostly cloudy. The odd light coastal shower today, then scattered light rain south of Christchurch tomorrow.
Westland, Southland and Fiordland
Fine today. Rain, heavy at times, developing in Fiordland overnight, then spreading elsewhere from late tomorrow morning. Possible thunderstorms in Fiordland tomorrow afternoon.
Chatham Islands
Mainly fine.

Wednesday
North Island: Partly cloudy and isolated showers. Mainly fine in the south. South Island: Rain clearing from Fiordland and Westland. Partly cloudy elsewhere with isolated showers inland from afternoon.
Thursday
North Island: Isolated showers in the north becoming more frequent in the evening. Isolated showers elsewhere from afternoon. South Island: A few showers for Westland and Fiordland, mainly fine elsewhere.
Friday
North Island: Scattered showers, turning to rain south of Auckland in the afternoon or evening. South Island: A period of rain for most, possibly heavy in the west, easing to isolated showers.
And at the Chathams
Cloudy periods on Wednesday, with a few showers around lunchtime, then long fine spells. Northerlies dying out on Wednesday. Northeasterlies developing on Thursday
