Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday

The Situation

A front moves up the east coast of the North Island today, while a weak ridge moves in from the Tasman Sea, extending over most of the country by tomorrow. Another front will approach the lower South Island tomorrow.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland and Auckland

Isolated showers.

Waikato to Kapiti, and also the central high country

Showers, some heavy and possibly thundery with hail, easing this evening. Isolated showers tomorrow.

Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne

Showers, possibly thundery with hail possible, clearing overnight and becoming fine. But showers, possibly thundery, returning to Gisborne tomorrow afternoon.

Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa and Wellington

Showers, with thunderstorms and hail possible. Easing from the south this afternoon and evening and becoming few and far between tomorrow.

Nelson, Buller and Grey

Occasional showers. Thunderstorms possible this afternoon and evening.

Marlborough, Canterbury and Otago

Showers, gradually clearing from the south today. Thunderstorms and hail possible about the coast this morning and inland Marlborough this afternoon and evening.

Westland, Fiordland and Southland

Cloudy periods. Rain developing from the south from tomorrow afternoon.

Chatham Islands

Periods of rain, clearing tomorrow afternoon.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Friday

North Island: Scattered showers, mainly in the west. South Island: Rain developing in the south early, then spreading elsewhere, easing to isolated showers in the south later.

Saturday

North Island: Showers, some heavy in the west, easing. South Island: A few showers, mainly in the south.

Sunday

North Island: Partly cloudy with isolated showers, mainly in the south. South Island: Isolated showers.

And at the Chathams

Rain, easing to a few showers for a time on Friday. Northerlies dying out on Thursday. Westerlies developing Friday morning, then turning northerly in the afternoon. Changing westerly early Saturday morning.
