Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday

The Situation

A ridge of high pressure dominates much of New Zealand today and tomorrow, while westerlies strengthen in the far south of the South Island this afternoon.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland, Auckland to Bay of Plenty, including Waikato and Taupo

Mainly fine, with cloud increasing tomorrow.

Waitomo and Taumarunui to Wellington, including Taihape

Fine, with cloudy periods developing south of Taranaki this evening, and elsewhere tomorrow morning. Isolated light showers possible tomorrow afternoon and evening, mainly about the ranges.

Gisborne to Wairarapa

Cloudy periods, with isolated showers north of Wairoa clearing this afternoon, and cloud clearing further south.

Marlborough, Nelson and Canterbury

Fine, with frosts in sheltered places overnight and tomorrow morning.

Buller, Grey and Westland

Partly cloudy. Isolated showers about Buller this afternoon, and south Westland tonight. Cloudy tomorrow, with isolated showers developing from afternoon.

Otago

Fine weather, and partly cloudy from Dunedin southwards.

Southland, Fiordland

Cloudy periods about mainland Southland, cloudy with showers elsewhere.

Chatham Islands

Showers becoming fewer and light tonight.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Friday

North Island: Mainly fine. Isolated light showers in the north and west. South Island: Showers Fiordland and coastal Southland. Isolated showers in Westland, Grey and Buller clearing later. Mainly fine elsewhere

Saturday

North Island: Mostly fine, but isolated light showers possible in the north. South Island: Showers in Fiordland, and a few gradually spreading to Buller and western Tasman District later. Fine elsewhere.

Sunday

North Island: Mainly fine in the west, cloudy periods elsewhere with isolated showers. South Island: Showers in the west, turning to rain with some heavy falls later. Scattered showers developing elsewhere later, but mainly dry from Christchurch to eastern Marlborough.

And at the Chathams

Cloudy periods, with the odd shower on Friday and Saturday. Southwesterlies changing northwesterlies early Sunday, then becoming strong later.
