The fire started in a takeaway food outlet in the station's concourse and spread across four levels through ducting, Fire & Rescue NSW said.
It said the concourse was now safe and fire crews were ventilating upper floors.
Platforms were temporarily shut down but are operating again, although passengers have been advised to allow extra travel time.
During the fire, commuters posted photos on social media showing smoke billowing out of the century-old building.
