K’ Road is set for takeover tonight with the first ever The Others Way music festival.

About 1000 fans will be hitting K Rd for the sold out event, which has 27 local artists performing across six venues - much like US alt-music festivals, CMJ and South By Southwest.

Event organiser Ben Howe says this festival is unique to New Zealand and he hopes it will open people’s minds to new, emerging music as well as bring back a few old favourites.

Garageland, '90s indie rock sensation, are back together with their original line-up for the first time since 2007 and will be taking the stage tonight.

Getting Garageland is just one of the highlights for Howe. Other headliners for the festival include Aldous Harding, Princess Chelsea and former Mint Chick Kody Nielson's new project, Silicon.

Despite the festival's sell out success, Howe says it was not set up with the intention of it becoming an annual event. However, he says they may consider doing it again next year.

“[It] seems like there is a space,” he says.

The takeover comes to fans from stages at The Studio, Galatos’ main room and basement, Whammy Bar, Wine Cellar, Neck of the Woods and the Flying Out stock room.

Neck of the Wood’s was a late edition to the venue line-up and entertainment manager Hudge says they are stoked to be a part of it.

“There is a gap for this sort of thing and it is great to see it being filled,” he says.

Whammy Bar’s co-owner Lucy Macrae says they put their hands up to be a venue for the festival because it feels so important to the New Zealand music industry and its growth.

The festival is showcasing the diversity of the local independent music scene, she says.

“It’s exciting and progressive.”
