Kick Out The Jams: New Gum Sarn

8:50 am on 21 August 2015

Interviews and live sets from the New Zealand music underground. This week, we catch Auckland band New Gum Sarn.

Auckland four-piece New Gum Sarn have hit a rich vein with their debut album New Gold Mountain building some well-deserved hype around the band’s thoughtfully crafted indie rock tunes.

Formed by high-school friends Oscar Dowling and Durham Fenwick, New Gum Sarn is rounded out by Dave Weir on bass and Sophia Lawler Dormer behind the drums.

Describing their sound as “post-rock”, New Gum Sarn’s catchy hooks and introspective lyrics bring to mind the music of Lou Reed and Television.

Oscar says: “It’s mine and Durham’s first band and I guess you write a lot of songs in your teenage years so it’s good to finally get to use them.”
