Cricket World Cup: After a super-tense finish, and a miracle six from Grant Elliott, the Black Caps head to Melbourne this Sunday for their first finals appearance against the winner of today’s match between Australia and India. The game begins at 4.30pm NZ time for those looking to get amongst it, while, if you’re not around a TV, you can also follow updates as they happen via RNZ’s live blog.
Tourettes, Luckless and Instant Fantasy: Auckland-based musician/poet Dominic Hoey aka Tourettes is in the South Island for three tour dates alongside Instant Fantasy (who we profiled for our ‘Introducing’ feature recently) and Luckless. The shows got underway last night in Lyttleton, and they’ll continue the tour tomorrow at Hilltop Tavern in Akaroa and Saturday at the Barrytown Hall.
Death and The Maiden: Led by their first single ‘War Dance’, which you can listen to below, Dunedin trio Death and The Maiden released their self-titled debut record last week and are heading north this weekend for two shows. With support from i.e. Crazy, they play Auckland’s Wine Cellar on Friday followed by a show at Moon in Wellington on Saturday night with Signer. Doors are at 8.30pm with a $10 cover charge.
Vitamin S Festival: The Vitamin S festival takes place from Friday-Monday this week showcasing what began as a weekly get-together for those interested in improvised music and performance. It features international and local performers and takes place at venues near or along Auckland’s K’ Road – The Audio Foundation, Old Folk’s Association, and the Wine Cellar. Find out more here.
Anthonie Tonnon: Wrapping up his huge 14-date tour around the country, Anthonie Tonnon lands back at Auckland’s Kings Arms this week for one last show in support of his new album Successor. Expect to hear tracks from that, as well as songs from his Tono and The Finance Company days to a few unheard rarities including, what he describes as, “a seven-minute, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ inspired disaster epic.” Support comes from HEAVY and New Gum Sarn, two acts you’ll want to arrive early for.
Silo Cinema: With autumn finally here, this week sees the final Silo Cinema screening for the 2014/15 season. The closing film is Stephen Spielberg’s classic Jaws, which begins at begins at 9pm, with the Silo markets and bar open from 5pm.
UMO: Unknown Mortal Orchestra have just released the video for the title track from their forthcoming third album, Multi-Love, which is due out this May. The clip was directed by Lionel Williams and also coincides with an interactive version of the video, which fans can play on their computer. Watch it below and grab the download for PC, Mac or Unity.
