A Maori expert in the use of geographic information systems says they're a powerful computer tool, which many iwi are using to meet their cultural, environmental and economic goals.

GIS can store, analyse, manage, and present all types of geographically referenced data.

Huia Pacey from the National Maori GIS Network, told the first hui held in Bay of Plenty on Tuesday to discuss the benefits of the systems, they're becoming very popular with iwi.

She says about 15 tribes from Northland to Stewart Island now have a fully dedicated GIS unit.

Ms Pacey says feedback indicates the systems are proving of great benefit especially for map making.
