A descendant of a Northland hapu wants Whangarei District Council to remove pieces of memorial headstones that were at some stage dumped along Onerahi beach.
The fragments are thought to have been part of a seawall but council records give no indication of exactly where the fragments came from.
The council suspects they may have come from Kioreroa cemetery sometime in the 1960s.
A Te Parawhau descendant, Fred Tito, says he doesn't blame the council for something that happened many years ago but wants the stones taken away to a safe place and a memorial or sculpture be erected to marking their new home.
The Whangarei District Council says it intends to take the remains of the stones to Kioreroa urupa.
