Ngai Tahu Seafood reports record return

Ngai Tahu Seafood has reported its second successive record return. Its annual report shows gross earnings have risen from $13.4 million to $16.7 million.

While its property and tourism divisions have been badly affected by the Christchurch earthquake, the iwi's kaimona sector flourished.

Ngai Tahu Seafood says it was able to operate throughout the major earthquakes because its main office is located near the airport, away from the badly damaged CBD.

China's growing appetite for koura (crayfish) takes most of the credit for the tribe's strong performance, although the report also notes good returns from its other species - fish, mussels, paua and oysters.

Ngai Tahu notes that China remains the major developing market for what it calls "food with status" such as lobster.
