Mana Party wants funding lift for police investigator

The Mana Party says the Independent Police Conduct Authority should not be closed, but instead be better resourced and funded.

The Maori Party has suggested the IPCA be abolished and replaced with an Anti-Corruption Commission - to ensure the public can trust the police and wider justice system.

But Mana Party justice spokesperson Annette Sykes says the Independent Police Authority doesn't need to be scrapped.

She says its biggest handicap is that it doesn't have sufficient resources to operate in a truly independent fashion.

Ms Sykes says, because of that, the authority can only handle 30% of the total complaints it receives.
