Maori organic farmers sees opportunity for new companies

The Maori organic movement says Fonterra's decision to dump half of its North Island organic milk suppliers presents an opportunity for new dairy processing companies.

The country's largest dairy company has announced it is making the changes because it is losing money as demand for organic milk products overseas drops.

But the Chair of Te Waka Kai Ora, Percy Tipene, says new companies can pick up the stranded suppliers.

He says Miraka - a majority Maori owned and controlled dairy processing company in Taupo - is a good example of

what Maori trusts and incorporations can create.
