A painting of the Ngati Raukawa chief Ihakara Tukumaru has been sold at auction for a record price.
Chief Tukumaru was from the principal family of hapu Ngati Ngarongo and signed the Treaty of Waitangi.
The portrait is one of 17 German painter Gottfried Lindauer was commissioned to paint in Marton in 1882 and went for $177,000.
A spokesperson for auction house Webbs says the work had been expected to sell for between $120,000 and $160,000 and is a record price for a Lindauer portrait in New Zealand.
The spokesperson says the family of Chief Tukumaru were at the auction and are very pleased with the result.
She would not name the successful bidder.
