Discussion about flag for Waitangi Day

9:11 am on 9 August 2011

Te Arawa is expected to discuss selecting one of its iwi or hapu flags to fly alongside the New Zealand one in Rotorua on Waitangi Day next year.

The idea was raised at a local government committee meeting on 1 August.

Te Arawa Standing Committee member Arapeta Tahana Junior says the concept came up last year when the country was considering a national Maori flag to fly on Waitangi Day ealier this year.

Mr Tahana says the group plans to find out from the people what they think in October.

He says the idea is supported by the committee because he says it would symbol the positive relationship between the Rotorua District Council and tangata whenua.

Mr Tahana says another idea raised is to fly all iwi and hapu flags, which was done in the 1920s when a member of the Royal Family visited Rotorua.

He says a date for the hui-a-iwi is yet to be confirmed.
