The principal of a Northland school says it will continue to reject national standards, despite a warning letter from the Ministry of Education.
Keri Milne-Ihimaera is the head teacher of Moerewa School where 99% of the pupils are Maori.
Mrs Milne-Ihimaera says the school has submitted its charter without mention of national standards in reading, writing and maths because it believes they are at odds with its values and are not research-based.
She believes the standards also undermine the ministry's own strategy for Maori learners, Ka Hikitia.
Mrs Milne-Ihimaera says her school has received good ERO reports and does not need national standards to identify children requiring help.
About 30 Northland schools are rejecting the standards, she says, and principals are meeting next week to discuss letters from the ministry offering to implement them.
