Television New Zealand's Maori language news programme Te Karere is now carrying English subtitles live on its afternoon bulletins.
The decision has been made in response to growing demand from non-Maori speaking viewers who want to be able to understand the programme.
Te Karere executive producer Shane Taurima says the hope is to extend the programme's reach to people who do not speak Maori, as well as making it more accessible to Maori and non-Maori alike.
Until now, the programme has been carrying subtitles only on its replays later in the evening and on the TVNZ 7 channel.
Maori Television's Maori news programme Te Kaea only carries English subtitles on its replays later in the evening.
