Te Wananga o Aotearoa says the number of Maori students getting a degree could triple by 2020 if education providers make changes that embrace Maori culture.
A summit in the South Auckland suburb of Mangere has been looking at ways to improve Maori achievement in secondary and tertiary education.
Of the more than 3000 Maori Year 9 students who started High School in 2004, just 360 went on to gain University Entrance.
The Auckland regional manager at Te Wananga o Aotearoa, Yvonne O'Brien, says Maori students could do better if simple changes were made.
Ms O'Brien says providers need to be proactive by recruiting and mentoring Maori staff into teaching and academic positions to work with Maori students.
