Better Māori representation wanted on Rotorua council

6:04 am on 5 July 2011

Two Te Arawa Standing Committee members say they want better Māori representation on the local council but disagree on how that can be done.

The committee is made up of six iwi representatives and three Rotorua District Council members including mayor Kevin Winters.

One iwi representative, Rene Morrison Mitchell, says the council needs to have Maori seats.

But, another, councillor Maureen Waaka, says seats are not the answer. She says the Standing Committee is a training ground for members to develop sound political skills and lead to better Māori representation on council.
