The Maori Party says it needs to look very closely at the detail of proposed changes to the Resource Management Act before considering which way it will vote on it.

The Government has outlined plans to overhaul the RMA.

The Maori Party said it will always prioritise Kaitiakitanga or guardianship of the country's natural resources ahead of commercial development.

Co-Leader, Marama Fox said it wants in-depth, detailed talks with the Government on any planned changes before it decides its position.

She said a vote to pass the legislation with a majority of only one vote, that of the Act Party, is not the way to go because it is such significant legislation and there needs to be extensive talks involving many people.

Ms Fox said the underlying message from her party is that the sanctity of the environment is upheld and that any economic benefits to the country are not placed higher than the cleanliness of rivers and streams.

She said it does not appear there will be changes to Section 8 of the Act which covers consultation with iwi and that is pleasing.
