The National Party says it will trial a scheme in which iwi would control benefits paid to their rangatahi if it is re-elected into Government.

In Auckland today, the party announced it would reduce the number of people on welfare by 25 percent through a series of initiatives.

They include working with iwi to help young people move off benefits and into work.

The chief executive of Tainui entity Waahi Whanau Trust says the plan would help move people into employment, but would be a challenge for iwi to take on that responsibility.

Hori Awa said today that it does not want to take over control from the Government.
