Two Bay of Plenty whanau ora collectives say they're optimistic an agreement reached with government agency Pharmac will ultimately lead to better health for Maori in their rohe.
Nga Matapuna Oranga Whanau Ora Collective, in Tauranga, and Te Ao Marama Whanau Ora Collective Trust in Opotiki will sign agreements with the agency next week - focused on providing more education about medicines and how to take them effectively.
The managing director of Nga Matapuna Oranga, Janice Kuka, says it will be a chance to train Maori professionals.
Ms Kuka says with increased knowledge Maori will have more control over their health.
She says understanding the chronic illnesses, and how to take that medication, and sharing medication comes down to basic costs, and non-Maori practitioners, who are unable to fully communicate effectively with tangata whenua.
