The wahine behind a successful exhibition of art by Maori inmates will be acknowledged at Parliament on Tuesday night.

Wiki Turner of Ngati Tuwharetoa and Ngati Hine has been teaching the men at Hawke's Bay Regional Prison, mahi raranga as a way of reconnecting them to their Maori culture.

She's been highly commended in the Art Access Awards at Parliament.

"Whaea Wiki" said the process of weaving taught the men that they had a way forward.

In June she organised an exhibition at Hastings' Toimarangi Art Gallery, featuring paintings, carvings and weaving by 20 prisoners from the prison.

The money raised from the sales of artwork went to Victim Support.
