Maori Party backs obesity report

The Maori Party says it's doing its part to help cut the high rates of Maori obesity.

New Zealand has been rated the fourth fattest country in the developed world, with 48 percent of Maori adults tipping the scales.

The Medical Association recommends considering taxing beverages with unhealthy amounts of sugar and regulating the locations of fast food outlets.

Maori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell said in the latest budget, the party announced an investment of $10 million to support Maori cultural and sporting activities.

He said whanau ora was about developing plans to live healthy lifestyles and become self managing.
