Many indigenous peoples worldwide are emulating what Maori are doing in education, a kaupapa Maori teacher says.
Raina Ferris was one of several representatives from Aotearoa to attend the World Indigenous Peoples' Conference on Education in Hawaii last month.
About 400 people gave presentations over the week, with people attending from 14 different nations.
She said Maori were leading the way in indigenous education systems from Kohanga Reo to tertiary education and were a beacon for other native peoples.
Mrs Ferris said a key message from the hui was the value of tribal stories and the importance of teaching their meanings.
