The future and value of Maori academic research will be debated at a hui on Thursday being held in Auckland.
The national workshop comes after news that funding for Nga Pae o te Maramatanga, the country's only Maori Centre of Research Excellence, will cease at the end of this year.
The centre's research director, Dan Hikuroa, says the focus of the hui will be on whether research carried out is worthwhile or not.
He says if people agree there is value in the research then decisions will need to be made on how it can continue.
Dr Hikuroa says there has been a good response to news of the hui and there are at least 100 registrations for it.
