Changing of Ngapuhi guard tipped

7:44 am on 19 March 2014

A Ngapuhi hapu spokesperson believes there is likely to be a changing of the old guard when it comes to Treaty negotiations as more young people take a close interest in the outcome.

Nominations close on Friday for hapu representatives to help negotiate Ngapuhi's Treaty settlement.

Next month, 110 hapu delegates for the negotiating board will be elected in what is the first part in the settlement process.

Ngapuhi spokesperson Piripi Moore says hapu need to carefully decide who they put forward and that new people are starting to come forward, particularly younger leaders who have taken an interest in the iwi's future.

Mr Moore says with Ngapuhi 144,000-strong, there is a huge range of skills and abilities within the tribe.

The times ahead are exciting for Ngapuhi - if everyone works together, he says.
