A new set of rules to protect and restore marine life in the Waikato River has been signed off by the Government.

It has approved bylaws for the Waikato-Tainui isheries area that allow the prohibition or restriction of fishing for sustainable use or cultural reasons.

The regulations include a ban on the taking of female migrant longfin eels and the introduction of minimum weights for

commercially harvested shortfin and longfin eels.

The Government says the new bylaws will support eel migration and the sustainability of the fishery.
