Iwi to reclaim Cape Reinga ownership

6:32 am on 29 January 2014

The iwi at the tip of the North Island, Ngati Kuri, is set to claim back ownership of Te Rerenga Wairua, Cape Reinga.

It's part of the tribe's Deed of Settlement, which will be signed with the Crown next week.

Ngati Kuri Trust Board chairperson Harry Burkhardt says his iwi is excited to move forward, but is also reflecting on tupuna (ancestors) who have died before the settlement could be concluded.

He says they were explicit that the return of Te Rerenga Wairua is vital.

The signing will take place at Te Rerenga Wairua, which in Maoridom is the last place where spirits go before departing this world.

Mr Burkhardt says it's an appropriate way to pay tribute to those tupuna.
