Local Maori buy Kapiti council land

9:10 am on 18 December 2013

A Maori organisation has bought a block of council land on Kapiti Coast.

Ngahina Trust has paid the district council $2.4 million for 5.11 hectares of whenua in central Paraparaumu, north of Wellington.

The council says the land was surplus to requirements and by law had to be offered back to the trust - the original owners.

Kapiti Coast Mayor Ross Church said the sale closes one door and opens another, as both parties move forward to shape the future of the town centre.

Money from the sale of the land will be used to partially offset the cost of building a new swimming pool complex.
