Paul supports Maori ministry idea but says hard to achieve

Maori Council co-chair Maanu Paul is supporting a call to consolidate government services for Maori, but believes it would be virtually impossible to achieve.

Te Runanganui o Taranaki Whanui ki te Upoko o te Ika a Maui chairperson Neville Baker has suggested Maori organisations lobby the Government to set up an overarching ministry for all Maori Affairs.

The Crown previously had a similar structure, however the Department of Maori Affairs was dis-established in 1990.

Maanu Paul believes government agencies would not give up funding to contribute to a Maori organisation.

He says Crown departments are not accountable to Maori but are responsible to their respective ministers.

Mr Paul says ministers know that in order to remain in Government they need to ensure they provide services to a majority of the country's population, which isn't Maori.

The co-chair of the Maori Council suggests his organisation could be a suitable body to oversee Maori needs because it has the ability to work with hapu that would be able to say what problems Maori face.
