Upcoming hui aims to help iwi avoid failing investments

An upcoming national hui aims to help iwi and hapu make sound investment choices and avoid putting Treaty money into failing portfolios.

Whakapiki i te putea - Raising Maori Investment Capability - is being held at the end of the month at ASB Arena in Mount Maunganui.

The conference had been organised for 150, but an organiser says its registrations have reached about 200.

Buddy Mikaere says they will hear from speakers with backgrounds in such areas as Treaty settlements, banking, investments, and business.

He says the hui will help prepare iwi and hapu that are nearing Treaty settlement, with information about ways they could invest their money or better use tribal lands.

Mr Mikaere says he doesn't want iwi to repeat mistakes made by some tribes in the past, which have achieved settlements, only to have their investments fail.

Guest speakers at the hui will include Minster of Energy and Resources Simon Bridges, and Tuwharetoa Settlements Trust general manager Temuera Hall.
