Ngati Rangiteaorere is demanding changes to the Ngaa Punawai o Te Tokotoru Claims Settlement Bill due to property "landlocked" by Pakeha-owned farms.

The tribe, which encompasses the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty districts, has told a Parliamentary Select Committee, that while it is good that about 350 hectares of hilly, steep terrain is included in the settlement, it is unable to enjoy it.

A Ngati Rangiteaorere representative, lawyer Donna Hall, showed the committee a map illustrating what she said was land the tribe owned, but could not enter.

Ms Hall says Ngati Rangiteaorere pays rates for the land, but the surrounding Pakeha farmers are the ones using it.
