Cabinet considers compensation for Nepata brothers

7:37 am on 10 October 2013

The Cabinet is to consider whether to pay extra compensation to two brothers who received life changing injuries in the Defence Force.

George Nepata became tetraplegic as a result of an accident during a training exercise in Singapore in 1989 while Damien Nepata received burns to 40% of his body in 1994 when the Scorpion tank he was driving crashed, rolled and caught fire in Waiouru.

The brothers have previously received compensation from the Government Superannuation Fund, and the ACC.

The Maori Affairs Select Committee has recommended the brothers get additional compensation for their injuries and subsequent hardship.

Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman plans to take a paper to Cabinet before the end of the year with a recommendation about whether or not to pay the extra compensation.
