Maketu diver says mussels big enough to cut bag limit

A diver in the small town of Maketu in Bay of Plenty says whanau will still be looked after - despite cuts to mussel catch limits in the area.

The Ministry for Primary Industries has reduced the recreational bag limit for green-lipped mussels in the Maketu - Taiapure area from 50 to 25 per day.

Tere Tapsell has been diving there for over 30 years and issues customary fishing permits.

He says he's got no problem with the changes because the mussels in Maketu are about twice the size of mussels elsewhere in the country.

When it comes to whanau gathering for hui or tangi, he says they are well covered with their customary catch.

The move will come into effect on 1 October.
