A science fiction novel by the late Dame Katerina Te Heikoko Mataira has been announced as this year's New Zealand Post Book Awards Maori language winner.

Nga Waituhi O Rehua or The Chronicles of Rehua follows the journey of four teenagers living on Rehua, a planet settled after the Earth was destroyed by ecological disasters and global war.

Dame Katerina died in 2011 and was 78. Her efforts to revive and revitalise the language led to Maori language immersion schools, or kura kaupapa, being set up.
