Two Maori dairy operations have received Crown funding to develop natural probiotic dairy milk products - which are to be sold in Asian and New Zealand markets.
$1.75 million has been awarded to two organisations over three years, under a scheme called Whai Hua.
The organisations are Wairarapa Moana Incorporation, which runs dairy and forestry operations in central North Island, and Miraka, the first Maori-owned dairy processing company, based in Taupo. The research partner is AgResearch.
The Whai Hua programme expects to generate $8.6 million per year in economic benefits to New Zealand by 2021.
