Porirua iwi Ngati Toa Rangatira wants to encourage its rangatahi to consider taking up trades apprenticeships.

Earlier this month, the Government committed $43 million over the next four years to Maori and Pasifika trades training. The 600 places in Maori and Pasifika trade training schemes at present will increase to 3000.

Te Runanga o Ngati Toa Rangatira chairperson Taku Parai says the scheme will be hugely beneficial for its young people in Porirua.

He says the tribe's role is to inform rangatahi about the apprenticeships.

Mr Parai, the Pou Arahi (cultural advisor) at Whitireia Community Polytechnic, and says the iwi will ask the polytech if it could provide assistance to young people interested in trades, such as construction.
