Television New Zealand broadcaster Shane Taurima is aiming to represent the Labour Party in its bid to retain the Ikaroa-Rawhiti electorate.
The journalist confirmed on Monday he is seeking the candidacy.
He joins three others already bidding for the Labour Party's blessing to run for MP.
They are Hastings district councillor Henare O'Keefe, Ngati Kahungnunu chief executive Meka Whaitiri and Hayden Hape, who is on the board of Ngati Kahungnunu.
Mr Taurima has taken leave from his job as head of Maori and Pacific programmes at TVNZ while he pursues a place in Parliament.
Labour will select its candidate on Sunday.
