The chairman of the Maori Affairs Select Committee says he wants to recruit Claudette Hauiti, who is likely to be the newest National MP once backbencher Aaron Gilmore steps down.
The Maori broadcaster of Ngati Porou and Ngapuhi descent is next in line on National's list, and is expected to take over from Mr Gilmore, who had been a member of the committee.
Chairman Tau Henare said Mr Gilmore brought accountancy knowledge to the group, which will be missed.
However he says he would love to have Ms Hauiti on the committee, and is excited about her arrival.
Mr Henare says Ms Hauiti has brains and nous, and a knowledge of the Maori world.
