Old boys to look at reopening St Stephen's Maori boys school

A past pupil of Anglican Maori boarding school St Stephen's says reopening it could help to boost the educational performance of Maori boys.

The school, which is located in Bombay south of Auckland, closed in 2000 due to poor governance.

Its old boys' association, Te Mano o Tipene Association, was formed last month and held a hui on Sunday to work on a strategy to reopen the school.

Ministry of Education statistics show a high proportion of Maori boys who finish high school leave without University Entrance.

A past pupil of St Stephens, Te Kani Kingi, says reopening it could help to address that problem.

Te Mano o Tipene Association, plans to meet every six weeks to work on its strategy for St Stephens.
