A hui will be held at the weekend to discuss strategies aimed at opposing a new expressway for Rotorua.
The New Zealand Transport Agency announced its preferred route for the Rotorua Eastern Arterial on 2 April.
The expressway will run from the airport close to the edge of Lake Rotorua towards Sala Street - replacing Te Ngae Road - which the agency says could affect lakewater quality and pose a concern for iwi over their kaitiakitanga (guardianship).
A Facebook page called 'Resistance against Te Arawa Land Confiscation' posted a notice about a hui on Sunday at Hurunga Te Rangi Marae for hapu and supporters who are opposed to the road.
The meeting intends to cover what has happened in relation to the roading proposal and ways to oppose it. The group has also set up an online petition.
The Transport Agency has consulted with the public for two years on three road options, including the one chosen.
Waikato and Bay of Plenty regional director Harry Wilson says people unhappy with the agency's decision-making should talk directly to him.
Mr Wilson says now that a route has been chosen people can view the plan, and they may not like it but at least it can be discussed.
He wants to help people understand what the agency plans to do, as well as gauge what their concerns are so it can work out a compromise.
