Ngai Tuhoe is keen to take over the lease of the motor camp at Lake Waikaremoana.
The camp's current lessees don't plan to renew their contract with the Department of Conservation, when it runs out at the end of June next year.
Iwi spokesperson Tamati Kruger says the lake and the surrounding land which border Te Urewera have always had special significance for the tribe.
He says until now the Ngai Tuhoe hasn't been in a financial position to consider any investments.
But its Treaty settlement - due soon - means the tribe is in the happy position of being able to explore developments within Te Urewera.
Mr Kruger says the motor camp would in the long run be a really good investment.
He says Ngai Tuhoe has registered an interest with the Conservation Department in taking up the lease of the motor camp, which caters for thousands of visitors every year.
