PN iwi threatens court action

6:42 am on 31 October 2012

A Palmerston North tribe is threatening to take court action if the Crown settles Treaty claims with a local urban authority.

A group called Ko Te Pou Marangatahi O Rangitane Ki Manawatu is seeking to block a settlement that's been negotiated with Tanenuiarangi Manawatu Incorporated.

The group argues the authority has failed to take the whole tribe with them, and says it will go to the High Court if necessary.

A descendent of a Rangitane chief - Brigitte Te Awe Awe-Bevan - says they'll go down the legal path if the Crown doesn't listen.

She says the Crown has dealt with the wrong people and has upset the mana whenua of Rangitane.

Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson is due to meet Ko Te Pou Marangatahi O Rangitane Ki Manawatu next week in Wellington to discuss their arguments.
